But, don’t we take away it’s power of shock and sadness by laughing at it? Did you also find all of Richard Pryor’s routines “sad”? He was the king of making fun of terrible and taboo topics, and we loved him for it.
None of us are sitting at our computers thinking this image should be occurring for real. I hate to thread crap on your thread crap, but it’s funny *because* it’s shocking and wrong… which is the way it should be viewed.
you are wise.
i shall follow you as my leader, silk sister.
seriously, i am so grateful for not having been born back when the shackles of the patriarchy were just so friggin blatant.
Actually, there’s nothing sexual about that. In the ’50s, a man was expected to keep his woman and children in line, by physical means, if necessary. Male battery of his wife was condoned, and she had no recourse short of leaving. In most states, it wasn’t even grounds for divorce unless he put her into the hospital. The concept of “domestic abuse” didn’t come into usage until the feminist movement. I know all this because my father battered.

So, this ad isn’t sexual, and it isn’t funny.
